Opera House Players: CHESS
From Opera House Players website:
The collaborators on Chess are giants of rock music and rock musicals, and here they have created a complex rock opera that played to full Broadway houses and standing ovations. In this musical, the ancient game becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super-power politics, and international intrigue.
The pawns in this drama form a love triangle: the loutish American chess star, the earnest Russian champion, and a Hungarian American female assistant who arrives at the international chess match in Bangkok with the American, but falls for the Russian. From Bangkok to Budapest, the players, lovers, politicians and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart.”

Double Play Duo at the Enfield Public Library
Thursday, January 15, 2026
6:00 PM 7:00 PM
Double Play Duo with Cathy Kreger and Jon Swift (Rescheduled from November 13)
With skillful guitar work and a beautifully strong, compelling voice, Cathy Kreger has performed for more than 30 years in the New York City area and the Northeast, appearing in venues such as IMAC, The Katherine Hepburn Theater, Chapin Rainbow Stage, and Silver Cloud Bluegrass Festival. She has released four CDs and has opened for world-class acts including Bonnie Raitt, David Bromberg, The Band, Patty Larkin, Maria Muldaur, Taj Mahal, Aztec Two-Step, and more. Cathy has a unique right-hand guitar style that captures the full sound of a band (bass, backing rhythm, and riffs, all interspersed). With a voice that can span 3½ octaves riding above the “groove” of her strikingly full guitar work, she delivers a sound that tells listeners they are hearing something special. Cathy is a good electric bass player as well, and recently she has also been developing impressive skills on the upright bass. She lives in Portland, Connecticut.
Jon Swift was a founding member of the popular Connecticut-based acoustic bluegrass band Traver Hollow, playing bass and singing with that group in the ‘80s and early ‘90s and traveling across much of the U.S. as well as various parts of Canada and western Europe. They opened numerous times for Bill Monroe (the Father of Bluegrass), and for other bluegrass luminaries such as Doc Watson, the Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, and the Johnson Mountain Boys, and they shared the stage with countless major acts at festivals. Traver Hollow released four studio albums and a live album from Holland. Jon has also played guitar for years, performing solo in many Connecticut acoustic venues and with the acoustic duos BluesGrass and Deep Ellum. His musical style is a “roots music” blend of blues, bluegrass, traditional folk, and pop oldies. Jon lives in Durham, Connecticut.
Now, these two experienced performers combine their varied musical abilities, styles, and interests in a fresh new duo that features both of them on guitar, bass, and vocals. The double bass is the instrument that brought them together as a duo, and each of them play it, as reflected in their name. Their love and respect for the music they make is evident in their playing and singing, providing an interesting and enjoyable experience for listeners.

MISCAST CABARET! Valley Student Theatre
Miscast Cabaret is like Broadway’s rebellious little sibling, shaking things up by putting performers into roles they’d never land in real life. It’s a show where the rules of casting get tossed out the window, leading to a night of musical mayhem that’s equal parts hilarious, touching, and unexpected.
Imagine your favorite show tunes, but with a twist: think of the fierce “Cell Block Tango” from
Chicago belted out by an all-male cast, or picture a woman crooning “If I Only Had a Brain” from The Wizard of Oz. These quirky, flipped-the-script performances are what make Miscast Cabaret so entertaining and fresh.
But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all about gender swaps—Miscast Cabaret is an open invitation to break all the casting rules. Whether it’s age, type, or just pure imagination, this show lets performers explore roles they wouldn’t normally touch, creating a one-of-a-kind experience where anything can happen. If you thought you knew Broadway, think again—Miscast Cabaret is here to surprise and delight! (from their Facebook)
